June 1 - September 1, 2010?- Freddy's Commuter Challenge September 3, 2010 - Clean Bin Movie Screening |
Because Fredericton is currently the leader amongst Canadian cities and is on target to become the first community in Canada to reach Kyoto targets, it was important that Project KATS included a "green" component.
Athletes, coaches and spectators who attend sporting events often consume sport drinks and water that come in recyclable bottles. All to often, these containers end up in the trash, which is not only bad for the environment, but a waste of resources. By placing recyclable containers in and around sporting facilities and events and educating participants to use the blue bins it will encourage Frederictonians to recycle, and further reduce their carbon footprint.
The KATS program calls upon a representative from each team to be responsible for collection the recyclables and taking the items for redemption. The designated person will retain all monies collected until the end of their sport's season, at which time it will be turned over to the project coordinator for deposit. Each team participating in the challenge will receive a receipt for their efforts and records. At the end of the school year, all monies collected from the recyclables will compiled into a fund and a donation will be made in the name of the KATS initiative to the pediatric unit at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital. This year's funds have been designated to purchase a portable oxygen monitor, at the cost of $800.00.
